The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating the state's roads, bridges, tunnels, and ferries. In total, its system covers more than 128,000 lane miles, 11,900 bridges, and 23 special structures to include long span bridges, moveable bridges, mountain tunnels, and subsea tunnels. Virginia has the third-largest state-maintained highway system in the country, just behind North Carolina and Texas.
